Former Shredded Wheat Factory, Welwyn Garden City
This former factory site, located close to the town centre and adjoining the railway station, contained listed buildings, including grain silos and was purpose built by Shredded Wheat. Consequently the site was of interest architecturally to both Historic England and the 20th Century Society as well as Network Rail, for their operational purposes.
Great care had to be taken to conserve the listed core of the original factory buildings, providing them with new uses, yet provide a high density residential scheme to reflect garden city principles, based around a new civic square and a linear park.
Following an extensive round of consultations and on behalf of our clients, Tesco Stores Ltd, working with award winning EPR Architects, planning permission was obtained for 819 new homes plus 12,700sqm of commercial floorspace.
